The Growing Popularity of Lymphatic Drainage

The benefits of lymphatic drainage are well researched, and today more than ever, requests for this work are increasing as the medical community realizes its value + general public awareness has increased.

Why it Works

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very different type of bodywork that uses soft, light touch to open lymphatic capillaries just under the surface of the skin. This gentle, repetitive and sequential treatment directly increases the exchange of molecular components in the blood, tissue and lymph.  The result is an increased rate of tissue detoxification and nutrient uptake.  Regular treatment can improve overall health, enhance the body’s immune response and reduce pain and shorten the rate of recovery from trauma and surgery.  Additionally, this gentle approach is tolerated well by even the most sensitive clients.

Why LMTs + PTs Want to Learn It

Due to the gentle nature of the work + and the proven therapeutic benefits, MLD therapy has piqued the interest of LMTs and PTs who are looking for new ways to help their clients, and in turn, help the longevity of their career as manual therapists.

The gentle approach of MLD puts less strain on the therapist’s back and joints. Indeed, in order to successfully apply this method of lymph drainage, it is optimum for the therapist to be as relaxed and at ease as possible.  The MLD for LMTs method emphasizes the importance of the comfort of the therapist.  Lymph Drainage is a wonderful compliment to all types of bodywork.  There are many applications for treatment including orthopedic injuries, inflammatory conditions, chronic and autoimmune diseases, perinatal and post-surgical.  On a more advanced level, MLD is vital in the treatment and potential improvement of lymphedema.

Become a Master Practitioner

MLD for LMTs + PTs® is a lymphatic drainage certification program designed for application within the scope of practice of Licensed Massage Therapists, Physical Therapists & Registered Nurses.

Summer 2026 Certification Schedule

Week 1 (Foundations) is a 36-hour module that is held over the course of 4 in-person classroom days (+ 6 online introductory hours via Zoom).  This module includes comprehensive anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system, edema pathology and hands-on instruction. Therapists will learn how to feel the movement of lymph under the skin and to direct and increase the lymph flow throughout the body with simple techniques and specific pathways for drainage.

Week 2 (Therapeutics) is a 36-hour module that takes place 3 months later and is held over the course of 4 in-person classroom days (+ a 6-hour at-home study/exam). This module presents advanced techniques — including tissue softening, deep tissue drainage, edema techniques, working with most surgical scenarios, creating individualized treatment protocols + combining lymph drainage with your regular bodywork.   Therapists will hone their foundational skills and learn comprehensive protocols for treatment of the full body, including treatment of the breast as an aid in perinatal scenarios and cancer prevention.  In-depth lymphedema pathology + an overview of acute treatment and maintenance of lymphedema are also included.

Therapists finishing this Level 1 Certification will be Certified Lymph Drainage Therapists who are qualified to practice MLD for clinical therapeutic purposes, and to treat most applications for lymph drainage therapy (including trauma, surgical, auto-immune) with the exception of lymphedema. This is the first certification level for LMTs to practice lymph drainage for therapeutic purposes.  Therapists who have officially achieved Level 1 Certification will be eligible to continue on to Level 2.  Level 2 is where therapists will be taught non-acute treatment for lymphedema.  Upon successful completion of this advanced level 2 training, therapists will earn the designation of a CLMT.  Level 2 will be offered in Fall 2026 — click here to view details and exact dates.
